Book Review : Brilliance (Brilliance Saga #1) By Marcus Sakey

Synopsis :

In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called "brilliants," and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in - and betray his own kind.

From Marcus Sakey, "a modern master of suspense" (Chicago Sun-Times) and "one of our best storytellers" (Michael Connelly), comes an adventure that’s at once breakneck thriller and shrewd social commentary; a gripping tale of a world fundamentally different and yet horrifyingly similar to our own, where being born gifted can be a terrible curse.

Review :

I know that I have to read this book the moment I read the synopsis. You can say this is the first book that I read when I rejoin Kindle Unlimited. I have soft spot for story with super natural character but not vampire, werewolf, wizard kind, etc.

I don't know how to explain this. But I really love the story. It was not special. I mean there are already many story with similar theme. Still I love this one because it was unique and yet ordinary at the same time. The story tell about the emergence of "brilliance/abnorm" in which people have special abilities that categorized into tier one, two, and three. This phenomenon was unexplained and cause decisive between normal human and brilliance. You can say the situation was like the conflict between human and wizard in Harry Potter story. The main character is an abnorm that join DAR to capture bad abnorm. Maybe you can guess that it will be full of conflicts, etc. Still I like him. I mean the author manage to create someone that I can relate with. I don't really know how to explain it. But basically I like the characterization. Unfortunately the ending was quite predictable. Well after reading a lot of story, you can guess how certain story with certain plot and certain character will move forward. After all, how many twist you can make. Still I love it. Besides it was trilogy. You know it won't end with conclusive ending. There's much deeper things than it seems. Anyway, I really recommend this story for people who want to read science fiction combined with thriller. Really love it.

My rating : 4 of 5

Angela
